VETERAN EMPEROR.
INQUIRIES AS TO NEW ZEALAND DEER. By TeleirraDh—Press Association—Gowrieht Vienna, June 13. The Emperor Francis Joseph of AustriaHungary visited tho international shooting sports exhibition at Vienna. Before going elsewhere he called at the British section, and made inquiries regarding the chamois deer which he gave to New Zealand. Mr. Fairholme, the British Commissioner, gave his Imperial Majesty all the details on the subject he had at his disposal, and said that the deer were increasing rapidly. [About three years ago the Emperor of Austria sent out a-special posso of his soldiers to capture a number of chamois deer for presentation •to New Zealand. In due course eight deer arrived, consigned to the Tourist Department, and they were liberated on one of the shoulders of Mount Cook or in Tasman Valley. So far ns the Department have been ajile to ascertain, tho deer are doing very well indeed, but as the animals aro somewhat exclusive and prefer tho back ranges, very little has been seen of them during the past summer. Their favourite spot is high up on tho mountains in tho region of tlio snow line. Last year a communication was received from ono of ilie Emperor's stalf asking how the chamois were getting on.]
