THE INCREASE IN CITY RATES.
WILL IT BE FELT? 'The increase of the improvements rate from l-10d. in the £ to l-sd. in tho which will bo recommended by the Finance Committee nt the meeting of the City Council on Thursday night, will mean an increase of JE3OOO from the whole of. the rating area of tho ,city. This, it is claimed, will hardly be felt at all by individual ratepayers. Tho rato is lovied on the unimproved value, which for the entire city of Wellington is .£10,017,220. This is tho only increase of rates which will bo recommended. The proposed nite was in force four years a«to, but which was then halved because its imposition had resulted' in a gradual accumulation of funds. The accumulation has nowbeen worked off, and it is proposed to restore tht> former rato.
