The only section of outstanding interest is that of the Wyandotte : and Orpington classes in poultry,' in which the Soutli Island championships were awarded, and also tho South Island Wyandotte Club's special prizes. The following arc the championship . awards: —Silver Wvandottes, E. D. Johnston; Golden Wyandottes, G. B. Jeffreys; White .Wyandottcs, J. B. White; Black Orpington, E. C. Baker; Buff Orpington, N. A. The plan is to import some of the best types of breeding goats from Europe, Asia, anil Africa to improve the inferior Argentine animals. As an instance of can be done by afforestation, Mr. .1. Young, of the Christchurcli Domain Gardens, quotes the case of the'Atliol family in Scotland. Thev had planted 11,000,000 young frees in the neighbourhood of Blair Atliol and Dunkcld, on a tract of 10,000 acres, which, during the owner's lifetime, had reached a rnluu of six millions anil ahalf; while the thiunings and, trimmings alone had been worth about X! an acre, and the land hud increased considerably in value. In New' Zealand, larch would do as well in W years as in 00 or 70 years in the Old Country. Hares are said to bo exceptionally nunurous in the upper districts on the Canterbury Plains, and fanners slate that. they are eating up and destroying a lot of the turnip crojps.
