MIRAMAR LAND SLIDE.

THE WORK OF THE RESCUERS. . PHILLIPS'S BODY RECOVERED.. •Tho rcscue parly which worked all through Mouthy night in the endeavour to recover the body of the man James Phillips, who was buried by the huge fall of earth in the Miramar cutting on Monday afternoon had to give way to a second relief gang early yesterday morning. ' Tho work throughout was risky, and at least one slight fall of earth took place whilst the rescuers were toiling on towards their comrade. At one stage work was discontinued at the command of one of the contractors, who was afraid of further complications owing to tho looseness of tho face, but

subsequently the rescues resumed, experts in blasting having been stationed on the cliff-side to warn the men down below it any of the cracks gave, the least indication of a tendency to open out._ Work proceeded without interruption until 11.30 yesterday morning before any sign of tho body of-the entombed man was discovered. Phillips was found under three heavy Bxß white pine beams, and it was seen that before the body could bo extricated a huge rock would havo to bo shifted. It was apparent to the experienced eye that to shitt the rock at once would bring down some 20 tons of loose rock and earth, and so a platform had to bo constructed over the beams, and men were sot at work clearing away the mullock which prevented the removal of the big rock. After careful work, in which almost every shovelful had to be blocked up to prevent tho face slipping, tho body was got out at 4 p.m.', and was removed to the morgue, where an inquest will be held at 2 o'clock this afternoon.

Phillips leaves a wife and threo young children. The other man injured by the fall of earth, John Wilson, was reported to be in lunch the same condition last night as when lie was received into the hospital. No serious developments had occurred up to 11 o'clock last night.
