AN ELUSIVE MAORI.
POLICE AT LAST SECURE HIM. (By Telegraph-Special Correspondent.) Auckland, May 21. Since March 27 the police have been trving to catch a Native named Ivaraka Rotana, belonging to Waahi, who is charged with theft at. Ivawlna. On a warrant being issued for his arrest, Hotana immediately took to flight and found refuge in the bush where it is supposed that he lived on food provided bv the Natives under compulsion. "Rotana has been in the bush between the West Coast and Lake Waahi, and the Raglan countv police, as well as Constable Rock, of lluntly, have had several ineffectual hunts after him. The Natives of Waahi were decidedly afraid of Kotaua, several even going the length of buying weapons for their defence, while others' would scarcely leave the vicinity of the ltainga. On Saturday, however, Rotana was reported to be in the vicinity of Waahi, and there he was met by a band of Natives who persuaded him to surrender to. the .police and thus avoid .arrest by. force. Accordingly Rotana gave himself up and is now in Mount Eden Gaol, Auckland.
