BILL FOR DOCKING S.S. KAIPARA.
• I COMPANY ASK TO BE RELIEVETA (By Telegraph—Press Association.) Auckland, May 24. The Harbour Board had before it at this afternoon's meeting a letter from tho local manager of the New Zealand Shipping Company, Limited, asking that the company bo relieved Irom paying the amount charged for docking the L.ai- V para, namely, .£3573, which tne company deemed to be excessive. The letter concluded by reminding the board that theexpenditure in connection with repairs to the JCaipara had amounted to tens of thousands of pounds, all of which had been spent in the port of Auckland. The chairman said that when the time • como for the vessel to leave the harbour a bill for the full amount was sent in. The position was that under By-law 191 it was mandatory that a vessel occupying the dock aitcr a certain time had to pay double in the event of another vessel desiring to use the dock. This was not a question of "may," but it waa mandatory. The course for the company, to follow was to pay the full amount and then to ask for a refund, and he had advised the manager of the company to that effect He moved that the matter be referred to the I'inance and Legal Commitfcc. In reply to Mr. Heather, the secretary (Mr. Brigham) said that, in addition to the Challenger, he knew that the Tofua wanted to deck while the Kaipara was being repaired. The chairman's motion was adopted.
