Tho French barque Marie, 131 days out from Philadelphia, with case oil for Lyttelton and'Dunedin, was sighted 28 miles off the Heads at 4 p.m. to-day. The wind was strong south-west, so the barque is not cxpooted to make port beforo to-mor-row. MOVEMENTS OF THE DELPHIC. According to time-table, the Shav;-Savill steamer Delphic is expected to reach Wellington on Friday next from Liverpool, via Auckland, Gisborne, and Napier. She loaves here on Tuesday next for Lyttelton and Dunedin, and is due back here on May 30, sailing finally from this port for London on May 31. APARIMA, DUE WEDNESDAY. Yesterday evening the Union Company's Aparima left Auckland in continuation of her voyage from Calcutta to Wellington. Slio is, therefore, due hero to-morrow. , INDRALEMA, DUE THIS MORNING. An expected arrival this morning is tho Tyser liner Indralema from New York. She left Auckland for Wellington at 6.30 a.m. on Sunday. LAUDERDALE, LEFT HUON. A cable received by the Maoriland Steamship Company states that the Lauderdale left Huon, Tasmania, on Saturday for Bluff. On completion of part cargo at Bluff she proceeds to Timaru and then to Port Chalmers for docking. From Port Chalmers she goes to New Plymouth with balance of. Huon cargo, and after completing discharge she loads at Hokianga and Greymouth for Australia. THE ROB ROT. Word by the steamer Alden, which' arrived at Auckland on Friday, announced the safe arrival of tho little steamer Rcb Roy 'at Apia. Captain E. A. Stenbeck tool; the steamer to the Islands, but according to the Auckland "Herald" Captain Jewer, late chief officer of tho Samoau Trading and Shipping Company's l)awn, is now in command of the Rob Roy, which has already made several trips between Savaii and Panga Panga. DRIFTING BOAT. SEEN BY TOE DRAYTON GRANGE. When the F.-H.-S. line Drayton Grango was Hearing Wellington, from Auckland yesterday, she passed a drifting boat, without any occupants. It was waterlogged and was, the officers. say, of the pleasure-boat description, as it contained red cushions. The oars v;cre in tho boat when tho Drayton Grango passed it about 2.30 p.m.. half-way between Capo Palliscr and Penearrow Head, but tlicro was nothing to indicate whence tho boat had come. 1
HEATY SEA OU THE COAST. . A telegram received by the Union Company states that at 9 a.m. yesterday neither the Arahura nor the Jioura had arrived at Wcstport from WellinEton. There was then a heavy sea on the bar. Reports from Grcymouth stated that there was also a heavy sea there, makine; the bar unworkable. DRATTON GItANGE, FEOM LITERPOOL. Late yesterday afternoon thb Fcdcral-Houlder-Shire liner Drayton. Granprc arrived from Liverpool via Durban, Sydney, and Auckland, and was berthed at Kind's Wharf to discharge her cargo.. She had a fine-weather passaco down the coast. . E.M.S. CORINTHIC, FEOM LONDON. After a smart run over the concluding*: stage of. her voyage from, London to Wellington, the Shaw, Savill, and Albion Company's E.M.S. Corinthio arrived in the stream at 2.20 p.m. yesterday, and after medical inspection was berthed at No. 1 south Queen's Wharf at 4 p.m. The steamer left London on April 1 and Plymouth the following day, Fine weather was experienced to Teneriffe and on to Cape Town. Leaving Cape Town on Anril 22, strong westerly winds were met with till 60 degrees E. long., thence variable winds and rough sea to 120 degrees E.. when a strong S.E. gale sprang up. bringing with, it high seas. These conditions obtained till 130 degrees E. long, was reached, when line weather wan again met with, and continued till arrival at Hobart last Wednesday. On Friday evening last,, when the vessel was between Hobart and Wellington, she encountered -a W.S.W. gale, which continued 'for 24 hours, and was afterwards followed' by a violent thunderstorm with very vivid flashes of lightning. Squalls of wind and rain continued' until Capo Farewell was passed yesterday morning. In addition to the passengers, whose names were published last Wednesday, the following arrived by the vessel:—From Hobart—First saloon: Col. F. Fox,' Messrs. J. Israel and G. F. Naldcr. Second saloon:. Miss N. Holmwood. Commander Hart, R.N.E., is still in command of the Corinthic, and has the following officers associated with him:— Chief, Mr. J. Thompson; first, Mr. J. On Friday the Corinthic proceeds to Lyttelton, and on completing dischareo Bho takes up Homeward loading at Timaru and Gisborne. She returns to Lyttelton the first week in June, and comes to Wellington to fill up on June 10, sailing from here for London on Juno 16. Advice received from Foxton yesterday stated, that the Queen of the South was still aground near the mouth of the river. She is not expected here before to-morrow at the earliest. ' ' Mr. W. H. Arkell, of the Tongariro, has transferred to the Kaipara as assistantchief steward. Departure, of the Athenic for London haß been fixed for noon on Thursday. As the Breeze has been delayed at Or.e•hunga, owing to shortage of trucks, she will not reach Wellington with her timber cargo for some days yet. The Shaw, Savill, and Albion Company's cargo steamer Mamari, which is coming to New Zealand ia ballast, is due at Lyttelton on June 8. Provided tho bar is workable, the Kaituna is to leave Wcstport at 4 p.m. today with a cargo of coa! for Wellington. On Friday last the Ennerdale arrived at Greymouth from Kaipara. She .sails on Wednesday with a full cargo of timber for Adelaide. The Maoriland Steamship Company's Holmdale was loading at West Wanganui on Saturday, asd was expected to sail yesterday for Sydney, whence she proceeds to Newcastle to load coa! for Wanganui. Advice has been received by tho local .office of the Wcstport Coa! Company to the effect that the steamer Yeddo is bound for Wellington for bunker supplies. It is believed that she is coming from a port ill South America. If she has sufficient coa! w> take her to Newcastle she will bo instructed to rrocced there. When the Unios Company's Koromiko was bound from Westport to Hobart a. few weeks ago she met with very rough woather on the trip, and was several days longer than usual. She had another trying voyage from Newcastle to Dunedin, arid was again a couple of days longer than usual on the run. but she came through without sustaining any damage. Thirty-five carpenters and painters, that had been engaged in repairing Nos. 2 and S holds of the New Zealand Shinning Company's Kaipnra were paid off the vessel yesterday, nr.'.l they are returning to Auckland. The Kaipara,. after adjusting compasses in the' strtam this morning, will proceed to Bluff. According to statistical inquiries made in 125 of the larger German towns on the feeding of school children, it appears that last summer no fewer than 3(1,000, and last winter 22,000 children came to school without having partaken of food of any Uind. Far greater—lo per cent, higher—was the number of those who had had no milk, while the others had been fed on very poor food substitutes.
