A PECULIAR ACTION.
«. . CLAIM FOR £20,000 DAMAGES. ECHO OF RUSSO-JAPANESE WAR. By Tetccraph—Press Association— Oopyrleht (Rec. May IG, 11.5 p.m.) Melbourne, May IG. An action has been commenced in which Peter Varawa claims .£20,000 damages from Howard Smith and Company for alleged .breach of contract and false imprisonment. The action arose out of negotiations in 1901, during the Russo-Japanese. War, for tho sale of the steamer Peregrine. According to affidavits, Varawa, acting through a shipbrokor named Moller, arranged for , the purchase of the Peregrine, but tho Commonwealth Government, becoming aware of the negotiations and the alleged sale of tho vessel to Russia, intervened, and declined to allow the sale or delivery as being contrary to the laws of neutrality. Failing to receive delivery of the Peregrine, Varawa came to Australia and interviewed Howard Smith and Company's manager. Subsequently, on an affidavit sworn by Moller, an affidavit was sworn against Varawa, and he was imprisoned for eleven days.
