A CRAMPED CORNER.
OWNERS AGREE TO WIDENING PROPOSAL. At tho Inst meeting of the City Council tho Finance Cominitteo recommended:—
, That a final offer of .£6OO be mado (without prejudice) to > the AVesley Church Trustees for the purchase of 0.17 perches of land at. the corner of Cuba and Manners Streets, including compensation to tho tenant and alterations to the corner of the building..
The property is owned by the Wesleyan Church Trustees, and is at present under lease to the Union Clothing Company. For years past it has been recognised by the city authorities that sooner or later a portion of the section would be necessary to widen the footpath, which here probably stands more in need of expanding than in any other part of the business portion of the city. The footpath is almost dangerously narrow at the corner, and the kerb is nearer the tram-rail thau at any other point iu the system.
It will, therefore, bo welcome news for the public to learn that the owners, in conjunction with the losseos, havo agreed to accept the City Council's offer as set out in tho above recommendation of tho Finance Committee, and that the wort will be proceeded with almost immediately. The lessees propose to mako extensive alterations to the whole of the building in the near future,. but those affecting tho clipping off of the corner will embody the closing up of the present entrance in Cuba Street and the first entrance in Manners Street, in favour of a wide entrance on the corner, to be constructed in such a form as to allow of the maximum amount of show window space.
