The Italian . public has accorded a very cool reception to "Chantecler," which was produced at San Remo last month for tho first time in Italy. In the earlior scenes, according to tho Milan correspondent of the London "Daily Telegraph," the novel spectaclo of feathered rioters had a certain amount of attraction for tho audience, but tho interest, and with it the applause, gradually diminished. Altogether the first performance of "Chantecler" in Italy was a failure.. Tlie plot was regarded as meaningless, and not evon amusing. Tiio "Hymn to tho Sun," which so much stirred the Parisian public, was only faintly applauded, and the sentimentality of Chantecler was regarded as affected and often grotesque. _ Those critics, therefore, who maintained that the sncccss of "Chantecler" w-as and would bo exclusively Parisian appear so far to havo beon corrcct- in their judgment! .Tho piece is to go to London in June, and its reception there will be awaited with interest. As in Paris, M. Guitry will play tlio title role, and Madam© Simonc that of the pheasant. A new line of steamers between Bristol and Canada is to bo started by the Canadian Northern 'Railway Company about tho middle of May. Hostess—"Mv. Smith is going to sin;> a comic song." Guest—"l know something would happen. 1 upset tho salt at tho dinner-table." "Father," said Httle Eollo, "was Georgo Washington a greater man than Santa Claus?" "I won't say, my son, that ho was greater, but ho has proved much less' expensjva."
