A PARALLELISM.
Sir—Your paragraph relating to the treatment of tho katipo spider' reminds me of an incident that took place on board one ofhor Majesty's smart little gunboats fifty-two years ago. At 8 bells a.m. the band' strikes up "God Save the Queen" (then), and the , crow cross the topgallant and royal yards, and smartness is required. On this ocoasion the foretopgallant yard did not just fall across to please the skipper—wo had to lower it and run it up again. Well, in that ship we had no band—but we were on that occasion a band of brothers. "Word was passed along to carry away the halyards, so with a run we rushed the yard up and didn't give tho bo'sun tim'o to pips- "Belay." We .carried away the halyards and down;came tho yard, end on like a bolt from tho blue, and dashed through three decks "like a" spent 321b. shot.. Yes, we played ' a one-string' tune, and it made the skipper" dance as' he yelled out: "Why the devil didn't some of you chaps catch- the yard, and save ' tho deck." ' ■ Pity the venomous spider, andgive it an innocent little fly. Pity the-deck and kill your men.—l am, etc., HENRY WALTON.
