Mackenzie, Minister for Agriculture and Commerco, arrived in Auckland this morning by tho Main Trunk express , , and thence proceeded northwards to Helensville. ' Tho Minister last session promised Mr. Stallworthy, M.1 , .", that he would visit the gumfiolds of the North during the recoss, and make personal investigations into the working of the industry. v Mr.' Mackenzie will accordingly spend several days in travelling over tho northem part of the province, familiarising himself with the life and conditions of the workers, and inquiring into the possibilities for the' further development of the kauri gum industry.... „... STREET BETTING: £20 FINE. Glsborna, April 22. ; Giving judgment to-day in the case. Police v. Robinson, a charge of street betting, tho magistrate (Mr. Barton), referring to the points raised for the defence, said it was clear, that defendant had no right to the option of being tried by a jury, and .-that it was unnecessary to prove that defendant Had used the street for , betting on more than one occasion. Defendant was fined £20, in default two months' imprisonment.' . ; MASTERTON LIQUOR CASE. ' ; Masterton, April 22. : Thos. Ridgway was charged in the S.M. Court'to-day, with receiving., an •order for liqubr':in a.No-Licensevarea.i .The evidence;showed .that accused Had written an order for liquor,which ■•was, signed by another man for whom the liquor was intended. Accused delivered
the order to a,brewer at Carterton. Counsel contended that the fact, of' a man taking an order from another person and delivering it did .not mean that ho had received it,' otherwise every man \vho gave-a. letter to another would be liable. The case was dismissed.. ' ■..
SCHOOL OF COMMERCE. i- Auckland, April' 22. ■The Auckland Chamber of Commerce, is interesting itself in the work of the school of commerce connected' with Auckland University. College. It , is. proposed to establish: a dogree'.of corn-' merce and an associateship- .of,: commerce, and to aim at. imparting,.-by special lectures by; prominent: cqrnmer-. qial men sound instruction in; practical commerce. Business men will.be,asked ■to recognise this degree as a , mark , of iefficiency. The.Chamber also-proposes , to found several scholarships. .• ;' '■■
