WHY? '

Sir,—Mr. Wilford in his speeches gives us lengthy eritioisms of the city finance. He has. licon for ten y«ais a membor of the Harbour Board, and for the last two years its chairman. Will he explain why, immediately after he left the chair, the board has been compelled to increase the annual port charges by £17,000 additional dues—much of which, the city has to pay? "Will he tell, ns why ill,ooo was sunk in a wharf at Petone which will not carry loaded trucks? Will he explain the benefits 'to the board of the lavish expenditure .on the Evan? Bay reclamation, and what profits ■there will be? •■■■< : Will he explain why -616,000 or more iwas sunk in not-wanted cranes, at the King's Wharf? Will he kindly explain, why a concrete wharf, which is n»ver used, was built at a cost of £35,000 ? Did he vote for these works? Is it not the fact that he was so busy with his duties as M.P. and with his professional work thai he had not the time to devote to his trust on the Harbour Board?

Until he can answer these questions satisfactorily, without putting the blame on others, 'he need not expect the votes of the thoughtful ratepayers.—l'am, etc., ' = BUSINESS MAN.
