Auckland,' April 21. r< I The sitting of the Royal Commission set up to.inquire into and report .upon the efficiency of. tho braking.equipment usedori .tho Auckland trams was continued to-day. Joseph John Walklate, general manager of the Auckland Tramways Company, stated that ho was an electrical engineer, arid had 23 years'- experience in different countries in electrical tramway construction and management. His experience of the Auckland service confirmed the opinion that the airbrake, worked in conjunction with .the track-brake/, was . tho, ; most ■'. suitable equipment,- and- would - , prove *to : . be thoroughly reliable'and effective. The air-brake did. go wrong sometimes, but very rarely. ■ So far as the magneticbrake was concerned, • the risks of failing without'warning were'too great to make it safe for installation.
