THE ROSS GOLDFIELD.
• REPORT ON TJNWATERING OPERATIONS.. (By TeleitraDh.—Press Association.! Ohristchurch, April 1. Dr. -Neeley, ohairman of directors of Ross Goldfields, Ltd., reports that the engineer states that the plant is running smoothly and satisfactorily. The old workings have been unwatered now for threo weeks, during which period the chamber for the stationary pumps has been practically finished at the seventh level. These pumps are on the ground; "together with all pipes • and connections. Each pump has an electrical motor of 240 horse-power, and is capable of raising 250 gallons more than, two sinking pumps, which, have unwatered the mine. On Wednesdaylast the manager and'one of the directors explored completely for the first time the old workings at the' seventh leyel, and found the faces and timbering, in a very satisfactory condition, after being under!water for a quarter of a. century.;- On ; Thursday the mine: manager took three pans : of dirt from three separate faces, haphazard, the result ■ being satisfactory to th'e managing engineer. Taken on an average,;it is estimated that the'result of these three pans of dirt show that the mine will pay on par capital, after paying running expenses. Ventilating pipes are being put in between the sixth' and seventh levels,, to insure a current of air. The mine manager ■ farther states that he can plainly see that the water that evidently, drowned the. pumps previously used to come in from the old Cassius workings. The levels overhead are absolutely dry. No attempt will be made to remove the wast dirt in any quantities until. stationary pumps are, installed, which will be probably in three or fonr weeks.
