CROWN LANDS FOR ALLOTMENTS.
Hie Hawtrey Settlement,' comprising 89 sections, has been opened for selection on renewable lease, and ' applications for the land closed at the Dis'triot Lands Office yesterday.Applicants will be required to. appear personally before the Land Board tomorrow morning, to bo examined, and ballots for sections for which there is more' than, one applicant will be held at 2.30 o'clock to-morrow.. Preference will be given to landless. applicants;. and the decision of the Lanl Board as to which of the applicants are landless will be final. Tlio Hawtrey. settlement is situated about 12 chains 'from the JohmsonviUe Railway Station, and adjoins the northern boundary of the town. It is subdivided'into areas containing good building sites, and, according to the Department's report, is suitable' for persons employed in the city ; who wish to build homes for themselves. ' The land is in grass, having been cleared, and sown many years ago. The sections vary in size from 36.5 perches to 17 acres 2 roods 36 peiches,. and the maximum capital value of any one section is £470. The highest halfyearly rental is £10 lis. 6d., and the lowest 13s. 6d. The leases are to be taken-out for a term of 33 years, with a perpetual .right of renewal for fnrther successive terms of .33 years., No person may hold .more .than- one allotment, . anil transfer is hot allowed until five years' continuous' residence has been completed, except under extraordinary circumstances, and then only with permission. .
