TWO STEWARDS IN TROUBLE. STIFF FINES IMPOSED. ■ -(Before Mr. W. G. Riddell, S.M.) Two stewards belonging to the Homo liner lonic, Alfred James Holmyard and James Bolton Colliard, were dealt with by the Magistrate on Saturday for misconducting' 'themselves while, under the influence of liquor in Manners Street on Thursday evening. Sub-Inspector Norwood stated, that Constable Nolan had warned both to move along, and also to behave themselves. No attention was paid to the admonition,-and the constable therefore arrested Colliard, a powerfully huilt young man. A scuffle ensued, and it was not until the aid of a civilian had been secured that the accused was handcuffed. Oil' the way.to the station Holmyard followed, and endeavoured to get the accused away, and be was also arrested outside the Lambton Quay Station. Holmyard was charged (l)'with using obscene language; and (2) With obstructing Constable Nolan while 'in the 'execution of his duty. Accused pleaded guilty: On the first charge he was; fined £3, in default 21 days' imprisonment, and on the second charge was-fined £5, with the option of ,"21 days' imprisonment. •Colliard was charged (1)- with that while drunk'in "Manners Street he was guilty of disorderly conduct "(2)" that he 'did resist Constable Nolan while in. the execution of his ditty; (3) that he had .made use of obscene language.. .Accused pleaded, in extenuation that he- had never been drunk in his life before. The drink which he" had taken was the first which he had'had in New Zealand, and ho remembered nothing of the circumstances. _.'■ His : Worship convicted '■ accused , on the first, charge. On the second' chargo he was fined £5, with tho option of 21 days' imprisonment. On the third charge he was fined £3, in default-21 days imprisonment. ALLEGED MISAPPROPRIATION; •■ . Ernest. Philip Berlyn was' charged ■ with that on December-20 last at Moles- ' worth he did receive from Robert John - Boddington £36, on terms requiring him to account for same to Frederick H. Labatt, and that he did omit to pay same, thereby committing theft. ■■■/. Detective Broberg asked for a remand to' Christchurch. .'.Accused stated that as the alleged offence had reference to Blenheim,' he should be remanded to that place.
