Mr. Fiolding (Canadian Minister of Finance) and President Taft dined together at Washington. ■ '. _ Opinion in tho United States in favour of ths Payne law being_ evadod by a reciprocity treaty is growing. It is stated that such action Would diminish British advantages; London, March 25. "The Times's". Washington correspondent states that a chorus of telegraphic protests against the threatened tariff war is reaching Washington. The Republicans aro impressed by the protests, and urge peace. Tho unpopularity of the tariff is growing East and West. The "Morning Post" says that Mr. Taft has requested Mr. Bryce (British Ambassador to the United States) to impress .Canada with, the necessity of granting concessions.: This is tho first time that Mr. Bryce has been interviewed since the negotiations began. THE FRENCH TARIFF.
PROTECTION ELEMENT ACCENTUATED. Paris, March 25, Despite the French Government's opposition (at the instigation of Sir Edward Grey, British Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs), the Senate declined to.modify its amendments increasing the existing duties •on British textilo machinery by 25 to 30 per cent. (Rec. March 27, 5 p.m.) Paris, March 26. The French Senate passed the new tariff by 281- te 5.: Tho protection element is accentuated.
