A plain looking gelding by Lethe, who is named' Leapuki, was made favourite, but he ran as he looked, and an even less formidable looking .one, Miss Peaty, won comfortably. At the start Dixie Girl led from Stepalbng, a straightlegged Stepniak gelding, with the favourite last. Miss Peaty made a- run after going a couple of furlongs,, butwas blocked, and had to pull round. The favourite was' in front at the bend, into the straight, but'a smart, run by Miss Peaty enabled, her to,win by several, lengths.
The Merriwee mare Truganini was made, a warm favourite in the Easter Handicap, but once again she filled only tho second berth.. In the race she hung out badly, .and-at the home turn, when leading, ran very wide. Here Hilarian came up* on the rails, but Lethean smothered everything in the run home, and won by a couple of lengths. The favourite was in front going out of the straight, and with Morrie Rose led till the last quarter of a mile, where Merrie Rose fell back beaten. The Trentham mare then came on, but succumbed to a fast run by Lethean, on whom W. Price rode confidently.
Merrie Land was the third successive favourite to get second money during the day. He began smartly, but Succession soon headed him, and led till the finish. Merrie Land. held the remainder of the field safe,'but had^ no chance with Succession, who won 'by fully five lengths; Marengo was favourite in the ngaimoana Handicap, and he won comfortably after getting badly left at the barrier. When the field was dispatched, Ballyshannon led from . Curator, while Marengo and Kelso were left badly. Across the bottom bend the favourite had gained ou the leaders, and finishing strongly he won easily from Aboriginal, who failed to see the race out. Kelso was a poor third.
Killaloo, who had 'shown winning form on this course at New Year time, and had also ran well at Dannovirke, was the best backed in the. Nursery Handicap. He-looked well, and had everything in his favour in tho way of a good start, etc., but at tho final pinch British .Maid ran clean away from him. Inspection began smartly, and led Killaloo to tho homo turn, but was then beaten. Only tho three placed horses got away from tho barrier together, tho others being badly left.
Advantage and Liza were tho. elect of backers • in tho Wardell Handicap, and the former won very easily. The winner led all the way. jumped off with her, but dropped back to last position until the straight, when she put in a good run. To Rotl was handy tho whole'way, but was no match for Advantage. Liza was close up fourth.
The concluding event was a- good race between several well backed horses,; but the winner was a rank outsider. Morrie Land was first away, but Fifi Eoon
headed him, and led to the turn, whero, Palestine came through, and in a hard finish beat Prauoer by a neck. The favourite was among th© unplaced division. ACCEPTANCES FOR SECOND DAY.
