Tne roadmen-have-struck-work hero. ■It 'seems that the council, who have 'been paying thorn'at the'rate of 9s. per day, have issued,, notice that, in future, the wage "would be Ss; per diem. At' this' intimation down wont the picks and shovels, and all left off work. To make matters, .worse, the .bridge over tho Roaring Meg, which is at lust finished,' is practically useless, as, owing to the strike,'there is'uo labour available to dp the filling in. Consequently stock cannot be driven across it; Settlers here are. anxious to know what has become .of that £30. allotted by the Horowhenua County Council several months back for the improvement '"of the Otaki Gorge extension track. Certainly no- money-has as yet been spent towards making, the way into the Waiotauro Valley■ easier of access. Has .that.money,..,like. : the. talcnti,.' in the parable, been'buried or. lost, or-hidden iii a napkin? \ .■-,-".
\ Mr; A. M'CheynC' Murray has returned to his', residence,: "Glenve'igh;" after a long and severe illness in Fcilding, Mr. Murray still looks far from well, but, doubtless, the bracing air of the gorge will restore him to his old vigour. .' .
. Otaki is hot what might bo called a: very progressive town, but it is understood that enterprising citizen, Mr. W.; J. Row, purposes starting a new venture, by placing a taxicab at the station to meet the trains. This is a step that will be appreciated by the travelling public.
The new swing foot-bridge,, which Mr. Smith had put across 1 the Otaki River to his property, was swept away last week by the heavy floods.
Grass-seed'.sowing is in full swing now -over the. area uncovered by the recent "burns."
