ESCAPE OF JOSEPH POWELKA,

FROM LAMBTON STATION.

Yesterday morning at 9 o'clock Joseph J qnn Powelka, a prisoner awaiting trial on several charges of burglary , and tnelt at Palmorstbn North, made -his escape from the Lambton Quay police station. .Ihe'prisonerhad been brought down from the Terrace Gaol during the morning to appear at tho Police Court in answer to a charge of having on-or about August ,6 at JPalmerston tyorth broken and entered the shop of Arthur Dixon. A remand was to have been asked for. . ;

Whilst in the cell Powelka received a temporary companion—a man brougho •from the suburbs that morning in charge of a constable. The prisoner was sent for shortly afterwards to be examined m the watchhouse, and the arresting constable, it is stated, took tho key, brought his charge out. and, as ho thought, locked the door behind mm. .A visit was made "■ to the cell shortly afterwards when the door was found shut, but, on being 'opened, the cell was empty. Powelka had gone, and is still at large. . This ia: tho second time that this prisouor has escaped from custody, hohaving made a dash for liberty in Palmerston, where bp eluded capture for several days.; . Powelka is described as a dark man six feet in height, slimly built, of sallow complexion,.and hollow-cheeked. , A message from Palmerston North states that tho new? thut tho Palmerston prisoner. Powelka had escaped from the Wellington polico caused a small sensation there. ■ '." ■
