Further particulars regarding tho explosion at Fitzroy show that according to the confession of Shaw, who was Crabtree's assistant, preparations for tho fire had been proceeding for three weeks. The goods, it is alleged, had boen removed during the night to another of Crabtree's shops at Brunswick. ... ~ . Crabtree was confronted with Shaw's confession. While modifying his own previous, statement, ho denied Shaw's story, and stated that ho found tho tap of tho gas stove turned on. When he lit a match an explosion followed. The detectives state that they have ovidonco supporting Shaw's story. Crabtree's leg was broken and badly burned. Crabtree and Shaw will remain in tho hospital.
The Sneddon family had a miraculous escape. One little girl, who was' lying on a bed, was buried in the debris, and was only saved from being crushed to death by the door jamming.
A girl named Lewis fell in her bed from a top room to the next floor, and escaped uninjured. .-.
