AN IMMIGRANT'S TROUBLES.
ESTATE IN BANKRUPTCY. ' _ A meeting of creditors in the estate of William Edwin Bateman, of. 'i'awa Flat I ', was to have been held at the Ottcial Assignee's office yesterday, but lapsed for .want of a quorum. The amount due to secured creditors was i! 436155. 3d., arid estimated valuo of securities .£130,' living a deficiency of .£6 15s. 3d. In addition there was .£47 6s. IM. due to uncreditors, making the total debts «£54 *.s. j 2d. . Against these were assets consisting of 'furniture, to the value 'of £20.- The principal unsecured creditors were Messrs.. Bason and Son, JohnsonTiUe, grocers, .£22 10s'.,' and Messre. Cooper and'Sojiji Berhampore, .merchants, £7 17s The; bankrupt, m his written statement, «xpiamed that ho arrived in Wellington five years ago as an immigrant from Southport, England, where lie served his time in the cabinetmaking trade. On | coining. to Wellington, he obtained employment as a cabinetmaker at ilessre Harris n and Co.'s, and Messrs. .Williams, Ltd. rhen ho, was engaged by his father in the samo < business in Manners Street, but the business was not a success, and lie. did not always receive his wages. On this account ho left, and for the past twelve months he had. been unable to obtain any regular employment. Recently he, had again .been taken on. by, Messrs. Williams, Ltd., at cabinetinaking.- His house at Tawa Plat he had built by arrangement ; with Messrs. Odlin, who had two mortgages on'tlio property. He attributed his bankruptcy, to the long time he had been, out of regular TCork.. The meeting was adjourned Sine die.
