RIFLE SHOOTING.

GARRISON SHIELD FINAL. - , WON BY THE CITY RIFLES. ■' ■" ■ Local athlet-es do not need .to be reminded of the fact-that Saturday was a wet day.-. To their sorrow and disappointment, it rained "cats an' dawgs, an' auld wives," as the Scotch say, and all sports were off—all. but one. The proviso, "weather permitting," never appears on a rifloman'Sfprogromme. It may rain, hail, snow, thunder, and lightning may terrify, yet the bull's-eye sport will not be denied. So it was that when the volunteer special backed into Lambton Station on baturday afternoon it received its;accustomed freight.; ;; : . "At Trentham the weather was "not so bad," if one may so express the optimism of. resignation to adverse circumstances, and .the progress of.the third and final round of the Garrison Shield Competition was watched wjth keen interest. Naturally, ■ the attendance was rather diminished, necessitating tho postponement of the final round of the Juniors "B" competition until a lateT date. As for the Seniors.and Juniors A-final, the result was victory for the. City Rifles and tho Civil Service Rifles respectively.. Tho.Guards, who were the run-ners-up at tho end ■ of the second round of'the, senior competition, were one.man short .for the. final, match, but nevertheless "averaged ■ 77.8,' per. man, as againist the average! of 78.3 of the City-Rifles; tho Highlanders, who came third; averaged 73.5 per man." By ..their win on Saturday, the City Rifles, become tho, permanent owners of the .Garrison Shield, haviD; now won the.trophy.outright. Top'Scbro on.the range—9o—was put up by Pte. Smart,'of the Guards, the.nest best.being three of 87.each, by.Lieut. Roberts and Sersrt. -Baker, of,ihe City Rifles, and Pte.
