THE PREMIER AT HASTINGS.
Sir,—Sir Joseph Ward must hare been disappointed with his • reception as Hastings. If the apathy of the crowd' at the post office, in the afternoon was chilling, it: was absolutely not a. oircumetance to the function ;in the Drill Hall in the evening. -It. was'. advortised as a: "complimentary concert and supper tendered to'.Sir Joseph .Ward." .A small charge of two shillings for gentlemen and one shilling fon ladies was made for admission, bjrt within a .few minutes from starting time, only., fifty persons;.; were • present. Our memberj Mr. Dillon, then made his. great effort, by imploring. those standing outside to come'in' free, for ;as he.in his. quaint maimer: put it,"we, miist get a crowd' somehow." Some /minutes after 8. o'clock, the total had reached a little over 100, but probably not 120, and. this was largely due' to Mr. Dillon's persuasive powers. I wa6 not at the slipper, but I am informed, on good authority,' that quits' 15' persons..were present. Sir Joseph Ward .must have.xead the handwriting on the wail on Monday night.—l am, etc., : DREADNOUGHT. .
