' There was considerable suppressed, excitement locally at the turn .which events have taken at No. 2 bore, where a now gas and oil vein was struck en Thursday afternoon, at a depth of about' 2610 feet, during boring operations, Since thcz till
sis o'clock to-night tho well has been literally hurling oil,and salt water for 35 minutes, at a time with about 45 minutes' intermission botweeu each flow. These periods are being maintained with clockwork regularity. For tho 24 hours from six o'clock ..Thursday till six to-day there was produced by admeasurement 60 barrels of pure oil, totalling 2520 Gallons, in addition' to somo' thousands of gallons of salt water. At tho .time of wiring there wero no signs of diminution' of activity. There has been p. 'temporary: . cessation ; of. pumping operations at No. 3 bore, but oil has been flowing freely ac its/own volition. No. 1 boro is 'being, cleaned out preparatory to experiments to overcome difficulties which led to its closing down after somewhat sensational activity about threo years • aco. At no time in the history of local borine has tho present flow of No. 2 been approached, showing the soundness.of tho new policy of-deeper boring. . : CANTERBURY GRAIN MARKET. - (By, Telegraph.—Press Association.)/ , Christchurch, January: 28.
