' Auckland, January 20. Salvage operations on. the steamer. Kaipara were continued to-day. v 'A;'mat'7oft. long and 2ft... wide placed over the holes proved effective.-, One orifice existed in. ,the hull, lowers than the divers, mere able to locate. Through this hole the water rushed when the pumps got to work, but it was eventually plugged. ■ ' • The Terawhiti's pumps, threw out 15,000 gallons of water' an hour,, thus,.coping with the inflow. A .later message states, that, the Kaipara; was " beached in Hobson Bay this evening at-low tide. She is now Aground both fore and aft. After-being refloated she came to Hobson, Bay, under easy steam, and with-her-pumps going to keep the water down. . • . .Further investigation was: made to-day regarding the rock or.shoal'in tho fairway. It is described as. a hard patch, about 40ft. square, surmounted by a pinnacle. •. . It will probably be a yjeek yet before all the cargo is removed, aud tho Kaipara docked. The nautical inquiry is to open on February 28. -
