Christchurch, December H. ■ ■ Tho question of, canteens at Government training camps was briefly discussed at the meeting- of .the. Christchurch } Presbytery today. The .Rev. John' Mackenzie noted with 'pleasure that the clause providing far.'Canteens had btcii etrucK out of tho Hill in committee, but he said thcro was no guarantee that it would not be eventually reinserted, lie moved: "Thatan view of the fact that tho majority of those in training camps under tho proposed defence proposals will : be under, the ago of 21 years, this Presbytery records its .protest, against any; attempt to establish in such camps military canteens for the sale of intoxicating liquor. The Presbytery notes .with satisfaction that a committee, of the Houso' has made a'recommendation to striko.out of the Bill the clause authorising | tho establishment of canteens, and,urges Parliament to accept the committees recommenda- [ tion.". . Christchurch, December 15. ■ ...A brief discussion on the subject of'canteens in. military training encampments took place at the meeting of the executive of the North Canterbury branch of the New Zealand Farmers' Union this-afternoon. - The 1 following resolution was carried:—"That,' in view of the vague utterance of the Prime Minister with reference to liquor in military camps, we are of opinion that no system will be satisfactory to .New Zealand parents that does not absolutely prohibit tho presence of liquor save for medicinal purposes in . military encampments attended by our sons for military training."
