THE GOVERNMENT'S COMPLETE SURRENDER.

Sir,—As' The' Dominion "• is. the . fairest of I papers in ' giving, all'sides a hearing, I trust you will 1 grant, me space''to' record my .utter" disgust with the' oomplete surrender of' the Government "to the retrograde, proposals ,of the The .Opposition, like their brothers in office, really have no policy; but it.has been the Opposition cry'.to' give :Crown' tenants the freehold, and the Government have surrendered. True enough, there ' are one or two Opposition members, like , Mr. Fisher, wiio claims- to be a leaseholder, but 6uch men are not taken seriously by .anybody..,. Again, the. Opposition have been harping for increasing the railway fares, and tho 'Budget proposes big increases, a most rotrograde.step, because it is not necessary to make railways pay in the ordinary sense, as any deficiency in fares is made .up-, ten-fold in - increased land values. The Budget, is one that will ,leave no line of demarcation between tKe two parties, because it is a complete back down. , The compulsory military training is a Tory move, ■ and a step towards conscription. - However,- the scheme is beset by bigger obstacles than many people imagine. - The one per cent, tax on all dutiable goods is another bit of humbug. On the whole, -it is a damping retrograde Budget, quite unworthy of . the party it is supposed to, represent. If the Opposition would go for land , value taxation, they ; would sweep tho polls at the next election,'but they won't, they will preach their doctrine of twaddledee, whilo the bogus. Liberals will continued to impress upon the eleotore.the value of their policy of tweedledum.—l am, etc..;. / A DISGUSTED LIBERAL,. Hastings, November* 16, 1909.
