■ Sir,—Oh reading the remarks by Lieutenant- ' Colonel J. 6.. Smith at . Christcmirch, before, the dismissal of tho volunteers at the funeral parade, to the effect that civilians should uncbvcr.vhqn tho band played ''God Savo tho King," caused me to ask: Wlij. do. the Wellington Garrison Band' omit this part of a band's duty on . tho dismissal of a volunteer parade? Are.they over.,instructed in their duties? If • not, why :.not?.> What do they have capitation for, also a fine ■ band-room to practico in, and a bandmaster, paid n salary? ..'And'l. ask what do ,they do, for it? Tlio 'last few years tliey liavo been conspicuous by ■their absence from tho 'march outs, with this i result: that to earn' their capitation tliey-have been compelled tohave privato parades on Saturday afternoons in the last month of. tho volunteer 'year'.—l am, etc.', , ; ■'.
