'A man named-John Greeks was charged at the Police Court'to-day with stealing a bicycle from'the Show, Grounds on July '15. ' The owner of the machine deposed; that he lost it in Kangitikei' Street' "on July 15.'. Accused stated; that he-found-it "on tho 17th without a chain, and ii) a dirty condition; -Ho reported to'the gatekeeper that he had found it, and remarked that ho-would keep it' till an owner was found. Some weeks ago the Palmcrstorr Boronqh Council set up a sub-corohiittee to consider fire.; brigade matters, .as the expenses to the council'had more than doubled, since the Fire : .Botrfd' had taken •control, "and a majority of the council were apparently, of the ; opinion that the. efficiency, of the brigade had not- increased at the same pace as the cost...'At. last night's meeting of the council; the srib-committee presented its report, which practically embodied this- feeling.. It also-, stated that the committee; was. of 'oninion 'that'"'the.'brigade coiildhave been''better controlled by the connciV than by the board, and suggested that the council's representatives on the Fire Board should Ho asked to ke'c'p'down the. expenditure as much as possible. , Councillor Armstrong, who is. chairman 61 'the Fire' Board; defended • the action of.the.board, which'he'said had been improperly arid ; unjustly attached. • He . admitted, 1 however, that perhaps the efficiency.of 'the brigade, was not •commensurate with the increased expenditure, but he. considered that they ■ were' getting good. value for what they, were .paying their -superintendent.:.
