• — * T" , DECREASE OF REVENUE. Returns of tramways revenue and expenditure' for. the four weeks ended August 18 show that-.the gross revenue amounted to £10,024, a decrease of £89 as compared with the corresponding period of. last year; Tho traffic revenue is'still somewhat below that of: last' year, but compares 1 inore favourably in this period "than, has been the case for some time past. Although - the revenue is £56 below th&t of last year, 6442 more passengers w«re carried, there being less longdistance riders than' in August, 1908. ; The working expenses amounted to £6995, or £116 more than last'year. The principal increases are on repairs and maintenance, per-manent-way accounting for £128,; track are lighting £89 (which was charged to District Fund last year), and cars £74. ' The total gross revenue, to date amounts to £51,082, as compared with £51,422 ,last, year. The total working expenses to date amount to £35,675, as compared with £35,213 last year. The principal .increases in expenditure this year have been repairs and maintenance — permanent-way £553, track arc'lighting £265 (last year charged direct to District Jj'und). The principal decreases in expenditure this year nave oeeij: Wages, motormen'and conductors £310, ticket check £230, compensation for accidents £139'. After providing for estimated interest, sinking fund, and depreciation charges,' the net result to date is a debit balance of £112, as compared with a credit balance last year of £1279. _ - Returns' of' the City, Council's lighting' department for July show that the gross revenue amounted to £4947, being; a decrease of £290 as compared with the corresponding period •of last year. Working expenses amounted to £2350, or £110 more ikr.n last year. Of. this amount, £53- is due to the maintenance of the city public lighting, which last year was directly charged to the District Fund. The total revenue for tho four months from April 1 to July 31 amounted to £18,707, as compared with £18,286 for the same four months .last year., . Working expenses for the whole period of this year amounted to £9235, as compared witTi £8530 last, year. _ After allowing for estimated, interest, ' sinking ' fund, and depreciation charges, the net credit balance at July 31, 1909, amounted to £3635, or £1110 loss than last year. 1
