Dunn? the month of August the Talisman Consolidated crushed and treated 3740 tons of ore for a yield of bullion valued at £18,720 3s. 9d; The smaller tonnage crushed is owing to tho mill being stopped for 56 hours. The costs for the past month were 395. lid., made up as follow:—Mine development, 95.; mining, 15s. 4d.; ..milling, 133, 5d.; general, expenses, '2s. 2d.. . WAIKONGOMAI MINES. . : (I!y Telccraph.-Spcel.il Correspondent.), ; Auckland; September 6. Speaking at a social at Waihou the other: evening, in response to tho toast of "The Mining. Industry," Hr. Charles Manuel, said that nest to farming mining was the most important in : dustry in the Dominion. They did not realise what they owed to it. Miuing, in spite of all. that had been said to the contrary, was a payable industry. He had been following up min-. ing for forty years, and ho would say deliberately that Wairongomai y/aa the richest placo he ■ had ever seen in New Zealand. Tho reefs were largo and numerous, and all carried gold. When the necessary capital and skill had been obtained, and the necessary machinery erected, tho mines would bcome dividend paying at once. His knowledge had been gained in the school of experience, and hi 3 opinion was that. Wairongomai would eomo day outshine Waihi.: The Dendigo reef was far richer than the, Martha was when he first saw it. What had' made Waihi was the right kind of men and' nionoy. The' Silvor King reef was doubly as rich as the Martha. The ore was sulphide, and the deopcr it went tho better it became. NOTES. ] Now Sylvia—Tho manager of the New Sylvia mine reports for last week as follows;— Operations were resumed in the north end of the mine on August 25. The work in hand consists' of eitending the main face a short distance to make roam for. sinking a winze at 160 ft. north from tho main ' crosscut. The ore, coming to liand is of iirst-class quality, strong blotches of gold being clearly visible in large .'blocks of quartz, whilst the reef is maintaining"a width of 6ft. Pour feet additional have been ! driven. In the crosscut oast of tho main reef a total of 41ft. has been driven, tho whole distance being in first-class country. \ Point Kussell.-The manager of the Point Eussell mine reports that operations for the past .week have been as follow:-No. 1 stope north has been extended a further distance of -10ft., but no quartz has been broken from this point yet until tho hopper is ready, which will be finished by Tuesday, when the ounrtz stripped will be. taken down. No. 2 stope has been carried forward a distance of 12ft., and the timber's placed in position ready for stoping operations. What appears to bo a new leader is coming in this stope on the hangingwall side, fully 9in wide, showing nice mineralised stono and silica There has, however, been very little broken down, so nothing definite can bo said yet.
