TRAMWAY FARES.
CONCESSIONS TO SUBURBS. ■ In tespoet to. the proposed'alterations In the present tramway fares and sections, the Pow6r Stations ODd Tramways s Committee recommended to the City Cbuncil last evening that they had received a further report from the electrical tramways engineer, (already published), and fecommended that his proposals as originally brought down, bo adopted, without alteration, but be subject to revision at the end of a period twelve months if it were considered advisable. .-.
The Mayor said that the scheme proposed, on the unanimous recommendation of the committee, was an. attempt to give a considerable concession to the/outlying districts. He was personally in favour of the suggestion. Councillor Shirtcllffo thought that the council could not go very far wi-olifr in giving the concessions a twelve months" trial. , The hardship to. those who had been buying return tickets to Island Bay and other places was more apparent than real, owing to the benefits thoy Would receive on sectional tickets. • Councillor Devine objected to the way, in which this, mftttor had bein dealt with. It seemed to him' thrtt. the committee were try. inf( to play the confidence trick with the'council. With a falling tramway revenue it was not the: time to give concessions that would. cdSt JiIOOO a year, and he did not believe in taxing general passengers for the benefit of suburban residents..
After a protraoted discussion,'the recommendation was adopted by,nine to votes five. Tho following was the division list:—Ayesi Tho Mayor, -'Councillors Bollinger, Hi'ndmar9h, Luko, M'Laren, Morrah, Shirtcllffe, Smith, and Trevor} Noesi Councillors Canmehnel, Cohen, Devine, Fitzgerald, and, Frost. . : ■ ■ Tho new tares will come into force within • the next few wooks. v .
