ACCIDENTS AND FATALITIES.
FOUND IN THE AVON. (Ily Telegraph—l'rosa Association.) i Christohurch, August 24. Mr. T. A. Bailey, District Coroner, held an inquiry this afternoons concerning tho death of Eliza Dilloway, a widow, whose body was found in tho Avon yesterday afternoon, and returned a verdict of death from drowning, but said that there was' no evidence to show deceased's stato of mind at the time. Ho thought that the man who found the body had committed an error of judgment in not attempting to recover tho body directly ho noticed it. A TRAGIC END. , Christohurch, August 24. Mrs. John Harris, widow, 58 years of ace, was found dead in bed at her house, Woolston, to-day, with a five-chambered revolver, of which one chamber was discharged, lying beside her. Deceased visited her son at Lyttelton ou August 10, and roturned home, but was not seen since that time. Tho son went to see,his mother to-day, but found tbe house locked up. On the police'breaking in they found the woman as described, with a bullet-wound in tho head. . GORED AT THE ABATTOIRS: ■ . Christohurch, August 24. Peter Fox, who, was gored by a. steer at the Lyttelton abattoirs on July 19, died at Christchurch Hospital to-day. . .adjourned; inquest.. The adjourned inquest oh tho body of Ernest Eumond Plodding, who died suddenly on August 6, will be continued at 9.30 a.m. to-day,.- before the Coroner, Dr. M'Arthur. Tho inquest was adjourned to allow of aa analysts ■, being made of the contents of deceased's stomach and tho medicine which ho had been taking.
