Holbein was un? fortunate in experiencing unfavourable woathor on the days'he.had seledted. for his attempts, while another swinmier, James,.Moariis, of Aberdeen, distinguished himself by getting within three miles of the French*coast after.a stay of 17 hours in tho water.. Wolffe's best attempts were'made on July 6, when he awam 35 mUos in H hours, and ,on -September 21, when'ho oollapsed within a quarter of a mile of Calais after a swim of U hours 55 ,min. utes, Burpes?, on August 18, accomplished about 50 miles, uoaring the French coast after 20 hours 11 minutes,- but he eolipsed this fine performance on August 23 by staying in 'the water 22 hours-15 minutes, by'which time he had got to a little over a mile from , the shore to the east of Calais.
