Ho was entering tho cell early in tho morning with a lantern in. one hand, and just as lie opened tho dSor he received a stinging blow on tho eye, a nasty abrasion of skin, being made. Ho immediately went in and tackled his man, and a desperate struggio ensued, until Constable Thomson arrived on tho scene. As soon'ns tho party passed through tho station gates, on route to tho boat, tho man in custody mndn a big bolt for liberty, and, instead of koeping to the footpath, lie led hie pursuers through all the mud ho could find. A recapture was eventually olTected, but by the time Constable Armstrong arrived' at- tlio steamer side, ho looked like .a man who bad been through a good fight in the backblocks. -His face was bleeding profusely, and his clothes were in a very muddy condition.'. . . . . ■■■ *■■ ..•'• •■. •
