The absenco of another, resident - of Ashhurst (Joseph Bartlott, settler, whoso-pro-perty is situated on the Palmenston Road about a mile from Ashhurst) is causing his family somo anxiety. Tlie police have been informed that Mr.' Bartlott left home on July 16, stating that it was his intention io proceed to Feilding to buy cattle, He has not been seen since.. The police beliove that no harm has come to him, and that ho . has merely loft town on a short holiday. For some time past members of the. Anglican community in Palmexston have been maturing plans for tho erection of a new church, and last night a meeting of tho Building Committee took an important step forward when it instructed the architect (Mr. F. de J. Clere) to i prepare * working drawings for a new brick .structure to accommodate approximately 800 people. Tho lew building, which will occupy practically the, same position as the' present 6ne, will He an imposing structure, built in pressed brickwork, with stone facings and slate roof; and will be by far the largest permanent brick church ' in;;' tho Wellington Dioceee. The only others comparable with it are at > Mokoia and Wadostown. It has been suggested, as an alternative, that the building', be .built of rock quarried at the Manawatu Gorge, or else that large river metal bo used. The opening of the Foxton Post Office has been, postponed till Saturday at midday. \ The unsatisfactory condition of the Palmer-, ston water supply was again discussed at last night's meeting of the Borough Council, when the Mayor moved that .the council take info consideration at its aext meeting the advisability of raising a special loan of £7000. to replace, tie present seven-inch main. The , Mayor stated that the present condition of , the service was'a serious menace to the. town in a dry season,-and, if the ratepayers' re- ( fused to sanction the loan, the responsibility of fire would be. theirs.
