ACCIDENTS AND FATALITIES.
A SCHOOL TRAGEDY. (By Teloeraph.-Bpor.lal Correspondent) Palmerston, August 4. A tragedy arising out of the late rains and floods occurred shortly after the Terraco End School disporse'd to-day. A'number of children went to the gravel-pit at the back of the school;, which the rains had filled with Water, and it seems that Wo boys got into the water. James Dryland succeeded in getting out again, but Robert Edward Larsen (aged eight) was drowned. RUN OVER BY A TRAMCAR. (By Tcleeraph.-I'rcss Aseodatton.l Christclvjrch, August 4. • Richard Power, a young man, met with a serious accident while attempting to board a trarocar to Fendalton. Tho tram was just moving from Cashel Street towards the Squaro whon Power jumped on the step on the. wrong side of tho car. .He was unable to open the gate and got on to the platform, and collided with a post, with tho result that he was thrown from the car and the whee's passed over one of his legs. It was found necessary to amputate the injured limb. •. TRAMPLED UPON BY HORSES. ■••■■' GhristcMiYch, August 4. A man named J. W. Frazer met with a serious accident on Gerard's Snowdon Station on Tuesday. Whilst engaged in letting some* horses out of the stable he got jammed against the wall, and was then knocked down and trampled upon.. Tho 'injured man was sent on to Christchurch Hospital. It is feared that Frazer's injuries are internal, and of a rather serious nature. SUDDEN DEATH. .• Core, August ,4. Mr. Thos. Roff, a well-known Southland sawmiller; died suddenly in bed at Glendhuj near Mataura, on Tuesday morning. Ho had complained of pains in the head, aiid refused to eat. He ■ was sixty years of ago. He leaves a wife and family a't Clifton. BODY RECOVERED. ■ . ■. _. ' \, '"• Cisborno, August 4. ihe body of Edwin James Norton, aged 41, a single man, was recovered from tho river to-day. He was seen last evening. Two bottles of beer and one of whisky were found in his pockets. MAIL MOTOR. AND CYCLIST. Whilst a cyclist was proceeding northwards along Featherstou Street yesterday afternoon, he came into collision with tie mail . motor van, which was returning to' the post office via Panama Street.. Before tho van could bo stopped the front wheel of the cycle was twisted/and otherwise tho machine : was badly damaged. The rider had the good fortune to escape injury.
