The new portion will bo ready for,occupation next month; ' _one feature in this school's organisation jnight be copied with advantage by otter .schools. The School Council, 'whoso duties are similar to-those of the prefects at.sec<onda.ry schools, is also expected to suggest to the headmaster any "" improvements in school routine or car© of .grounds which ocIcur tothemi This system has been in operation six years, and has. been a.decided sucicess in raising the tone of the school. and fostering espnt-de-co<rps. The; annual .election' of the council took' place a few days ago ; and "that members looked on it as-a position of honour in school life is testified by the fact that 4? nominations for nine :"seats" were. received.

These were out-voted by a new element at the annual meeting last week, when nearly all. the officers elected were recent acquisitions. The probability is that most of the old members, who are among the laTgcst exhibitors, will withdraw altogether from the society. Tho Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animab -yesterday appointed Mr. F. L. Smith. (of;'Aramoho) as inspector. ' It was decided,' -in view of the shortage of funds, to circularise all members with a view to setting /on foot a special <elfort to induce a larger number of the public to -subscribo to the society. In", referenco to the reported affront offered to. a. referee by members of a ladies' hockey team, who were defeated in. a match last Saturday,, tho Hockey Association has .decided to hold an inquiry into the matter.
