(By Telcgraph.-Spccial Correspondent.) . ' Palmerston North,, July 21. A meeting of the committee ot the Manawatu Horticultural Society was held last night. A number of the prize-winners at the Autumn Show intimated that they would donate their winnings towards the funds of the society. September 8 and 9 were- fixed as the dates for the bulb show, and it was resolved to endeavour to secure a hall in the centre of the town. Tho schedule will be issued in a few days. *A systematic canvass of town and country is to be made to increase tho membership, At last night's meeting of tho Borough Council, Councillor Mowlem mentioned that he had been informed that a number of big trees in Eitzherbert Street were dead, the cause being tho attacks of a native parasite. Councillor Stubbs (chairman of the Reserves Committee) said that this would be a serious matter, and probably all the trees would havo to be sprayed. The sub-committee,' appointed at yesterday's meeting of the General .Committee of the Manawatu A, and P. Association, to frame conditions tor the pioposed motor-car competitions on the first day of the Spring Show, have arranged four events, comprising driving competition (men only), driving event, 'backing competition (men only), and a sweepstake backing and driving competition. Prizes for the first three competitions will bo: First, gold medal, becond, silver medal. Mrs. Mjyo, sen , of Foxton Line, has presented another half-dozen ornamental palms to tho Borough Council, these to be planted m the Square. Tho local police have decided to assist tho cycle inspectors in keeping tho footpaths clear v of cvclists. Eoceut rain has caused more slips on the road through tho Manawatu Gorge. Yesterday a quantity of earth came down, and carried away a portion of a small bridge, thus blocking the road. Mr. V>. P. Jones, the newly-appointed Clerk of the Pohangina County Council, took up his dutieb yesterday. The retiring clerl; (Air. J. Coyle), who has received an appointment as Secretaiy to tho Wellington Hospital Trustees, leaves for Wellington fcoday» Tho Borough Council has responded promptly to tho call of the workless. At last night's meeting the Mayor moved a series of resolutions whcili had for their object the acceleration of works provided for in tho estimates for tho year. Those will bo put in hand at once, and, as tho Mayor pointed out, will givo work to over thirty men. In moving the 'resolutions, tho Mayor remarked that it was well known that there wore a good many unemployed in the town. Cases had coino under their notico of dire poverty and distress. Councillor M'Kenzio askod if the works wero to bo used purely a3 relief works. The Mayor replied in tho affirmative, and said that he proposed to ask tho council to allow him to act in conjunction with tho engineer in choosing men to do tho work, so that tho most needy would receive preference. In reply to Councillor Armstrong, his Worship stated that it was also proposed to arrange for older and less competent men to clean out the water tablei. Tho Wanganui ladies' hockey team defeated Palmerston Old Girls by 3 goals to 2, after a close game. Miss Cunningham, lato of Victoria College, scored twico for Wajiganui, tbe other goal being achioved in a forward scramble. Miss Smith did tho scoring; for Palmerston;
