PERSONAL NOTES FROM LONDON. London, May 20. Mr! P. Boardy, of Northcote, Auckland, is on his way to England, via Vancouver, on a pleasure trip. Miss E. M. Norrie, of Auckland, has arrived in London,on a visit, and is staying with Dr. and Mrs. A. 0. Knight, of Auckland, at their residence at Harrow. Mr. W. J. Cuttle, of Dunedin. who arrived by tho Asturias, will visit Scotland and Ireland, and then proceed to America. Ho is travelling to gain exporienco in Y.M.C.A. work. ■ Mr. W. A. Parkinson, of Hawcra, who travelled by the Athenic, has como two of his sons who are studying here. After a somewhat short stay ho will return by tho Suez route.
Mr. Dufiield, of : the Telegraph Office, Christchurch, and Mrs. Buttcrfield arrived in London on May 15. Mr. Duffield is on twelve months' leavo of absence, and will spend threo months in tho United Kingdom.
Mr; H. D. Bell, K.C., of Wellington, has arrived in London. He will represent Victoria College, Wellington, at -tho Darwin centenary celebrations at Cambridge, and he is also engaged in two cases in tho Privy Council.
Mr. Henry Peck, of Auckland, is now in London, and later will visit Hanley, Manchester, Liverpool, and the Isle of Man, and make a short tour on the Continent. Mr. Peck is accompanied by' Mr.' D. F. Whitaker, also of Auckland.
Dr. Geoffrey Clayton, of Christchurch, has loft London for' Paris and Berlin for special study of the methods in the maternity hospitals in those cities,-and incidentally to pick up the latest ideas in hospital methods generally.
Mr. Alex. Dawson, of Dunedin, goes next week to Scotland, afterwards' returning to London for'six or seven weeks prior to taking a brief tour on the Continent. Mr. Dawson purposes returning by way of America, leaving London some time'in August. Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Ballance and Mrs. Holmwood, of Wellington, arrived by the Medic. Mr. Ballanco intends pursuing his studies in singing in. London, and has brought with'him several introductions to well-known people in the musical world.
. Mr. John Roberts, of Dunediri; and 'Mrs. Roberts and daughters, who arrived by tiie Moldavia, are' now staying at Selkirk, .'and will pay a round of visits to friends in various parts of the, country before leaving England on Ootober 1 on their return home via Vancouver. ' , •
Mr. Arthur C. Hart, with his sister-in-law, Mrs. R. W; Hart, and his nieces, the Misses' Hart, arrived'in London last week by the Ast'urias., They party will stay in London.for the' season, and will then go"on ! tour in Europe for a time ero retraqing their' steps to iifew Zealand.' ■
Mrs., Cecil Wroaghton and Miss Wroughtoh/'of Canterbury, who left the Friedrich der Grosse 'at Naples, and spent 'several neeks on tho Continont visiting various places in Italy, Switzerland, Germany, and France, have arrived in London, where they intend remaining for the season. Mr.-B. J. Ager, of Christchurch, after a tour of • tho Australian capitals, came to London by the Orontes, arriving on May 12. He will visit some of tho largo manufacturing towns of Engtand and Scotland, and if time permits will also visit France and the United States. He expects to arrive back in Now Zealand about October.
Mrs. C. W. Fisher, Miss Clara Fisher, and Messrs. A. J. and F. C. Fisher, of Christchurch, have arrived in London. Mr. A. J. Fisher and his brother intend making an extended visit 'to tho West Coast parts and various Midland centres on a business mission. The party will remain about four months in England, : returning to New Zealand via Suez.
Mr. and Mrs. Chas. W. Hay, of Dunedin, who arrived by tho Orontes, will spend part of their holiday in Scotland, mostly in tho vicinity of Dundee.' Mr. Hay will attend the Dental Congress, in Berlin in August, and will visit various dental schools in London and elsewhore: , - They propose to return to Now Zealand by way of New York and Canada, ,probably about the middlo of October. ! ~
Mr. Charles Worsley, a New Zealand artist, has arrived in London, accompanied by his wife. They landed in March at Naples, in order that Mr. Worsley might do somo sketching on the Continent. .They have visited various places in Italy, the Tyrol, Switzerland, and France. Mr. Worsley hopes to hold an exhibition of his pictures, which will be exclusively of New Zealand scenery, in London early next month.
< The Hon. Oliver Samuel, M.L.C., of New Plymouth, arid Mrs. Samuel,; who left .Wellington at,the beginning of January, arrived in London on May 6. They stopped for some weeks en route at Sydney and Melbourne, Colombo, Egypt (visiting the upper reaches, of tho Nile as far as Assouan), Italy, and the Riviera, and at Marseilles they joined a pleasure cruiso to Corfu,-the Isles of. Greece, Smyrna, Constantinople, etc. They will leave for home, via Canada, on August 13. ,■: ... The Athenic brought a large.consignmerit Zealand visitors. Amongst them are Mr. H. J). Bell, K.C.,: of Wellington; Dr. and Mrs. Morice; of Greymouth) and Miss ltubi Seddoh; the Rev; G. Clement, of Auckland, who, has resigned his .charge of the Franklin Road Church; Lieut. W. R. Holmes, R.N.R., chief officer of H.M.: cable steamer Iris, who is on a six months' trip to: England; and the Rev. A. E. Worsley, late vicar of St. Mary's, Levin, who has resigned his charge. . The High Commissioner paid a visit recently to the ■■ National Physical Laboratory at Teddington, and , presented to Mr. Adamson, secretary of the Institute of Mechanical Engineers, the gold medal of the New Zealand branch of tho Institute, and an address forwarded by the Wellington branch, in recognition of Mr. Adatason's services to the many young New Zealand engineers who have ■visited the Old Country:- The High Commissioner was afterwards entertained to lunch : at Teddington. Lord who was made a member of the PatteiiDiakers' Company a week or, two ago, has now been admitted through that companv to the Freedom of the City of London. New Zealand's ex-Governor took part in the annual meeting of the Soldiers' and Sailors' Help Society, ' and 'expressed' his gratitude to the society for its.help in starting the Veterans' Home in New Zealand for old soldiers and sailors.' The home, he saidj was now well on its legs, with over £8000 to its credit:
Mr. and Mrs. J. R. Self, of Auckland, travelled as far as Marseilles by and thence .overland to London. Mr. Self is combining business with pleasure, his intention being to' <lo considerable buying for his business in Auckland while here. Cameron, and Mr. and Mrs. Charles Izard. • Mr. Crosby :Smith, president of tho Inrercargill Chamber of Commerce, and chairman of the Southland Education Board, is revisiting Halifax, his native, town, after an absence of 33 years. .As a boy Mr. Smith worked in the mills at Halifax, ond. then emigrated to Now Zealand, where ho has had a successful career. While in England Mr. Smith will arrange for the publication of a botanical work on tho flora of Now Zealand, to bo illustrated with 200 plates. ; Ho lectured a few nights ago on New Zealand floweri and plants before tho Halifax Scientific Society. ~: ... ~- '. _ ..;.•.
