Mayoral Wesetitatlon at Eastbourne. A most enjoyable social evening was spent on Friday at llona House. Tho hall was beautifully decorated, and tbero wore about 120 people present The function was organised by tho ladies of tho borough, in honour of tho newly-installed Mayor and Mayoress, Mr. and Mrs. John Barr During the hrßt part of tho proceedings, Miss Mollio M'Koogan presented to tho Mayoress a .beautiful bouquet on behalf of the ladies, and tho Mayoress suitably replied Then came tho musical portion of the programme, which was a vory creditable one, items bomg rendered by Mesdames Kelly, Stevens, and Mason, Misses Dimond', Savage, 'Walsh, and Simpson, and Messrs. Baker, Kelly, Harris, Roberts, and E Short Tho chairman, Mr Coombe, addressed the gathering, and explained tho .motive of the meeting. He thon called upon' Councillor Wills, who, in a pleasant congratulatory speech, asked Mr Barr to accept, on behalf of the ladies of Eastbourne, a Mayoral robe. The Mayor thanked the ladies for their gift, and oxpressed tho pleasure which he and Mrs Barr felt at the N kmdly feeling manifested by the residents of Eastbourne He would always value tho handsome gift very highly. The hall was afterwards cleared for dancing, and the entertainment continued till an early hour in tho morning All were agrood that the Ladies' Committee had most successfully arranged for tho pleasure of tho many gneste Mrs Barr wore a frock of black silk, relieved with cream lace, Mrs Holdsworthy, black chiffon taffetas, with lace bertha, Mrs. Wills, black voilo, Mrs. Tomlinson, grey Bdk with transparent yoke ano* sleeves; Mrs. Campbell, cream frock A Hastings Social. A social was held in St Matthew's Hall, Hastings, on Saturday , night to celebrate the recent marriage of Mrs. Agnew (Miss Hawthorne) and to tale leave of Mrs. Mac Duff Boyd, who is going on an extended tour in Australia and tho South Sea Islands Mr. Campbell presented Mrs Agnew with a silver-mounted salad bowl, and the Rev Mr Lamsoy presented Mrs Mac Duff Boyd with a cheaneT Still "Dofendlng." Chnsfchurch women are to hold a meeting, next Thursday to urge that the tune has* come when tho question of the defence of New Zealand must bo considered, together with that of tho position of the British Navy as compared with the navies of other Powers It sounds a little dull, but, perhaps Chnstchurch finds that sort'of statement exciting Miss Synes Clinton, from Dunedm, is staying with Mrs. Robert Parker. The marriage of Miss Mason to Mr. ,Wyvern Williams will take place m Hastings next month Tho ladies' Auxiliary of tho YJH.C.A. are holding a grand winter carnival—which is another namo for a bazaar—at tho Y.M.C.A. rooms next Wednesday and following days. Mr. Alfred Hill's charming "Waiata Poi" is to be sung at tho benefit concert to-night by Mrs. Tai To Tau, who has a beautiful voice, and will probably sing tho song in character. Those who wore present at the civic, reception given to the Convention of tho Christian Temperance Union in tho Council Chamber will remember how delightfully Mrs Te Tau sang then, and will look forward to hearing her rendering of tie "Waiata" to-night \ i ,
