NEW IDEA FOR BAZAARS.
:.;A.good manyipf us,.-when asked to contribute .to thft, furnishing .of a , , bazaar stall (says •;ail "Australiau paper), dp so'with a sort of grudge. " We feel that wb' are being forced to spend money and "time over articles/with: the probability that thcy'tvil] bo eventually sold for- a good deal less than the materials cost. Of course,, there aro tvrp 'sides to .be looketl , at, for; no matter how far .donations to a bazaar are Undersold, all .bring , profit.? Still' it,-is -natural to dosiro that one's own work should be appreciated.' -'.Quite ,a now idea conies from .England" through tho' hledium of a ; -wellknown worker of .tho, Victorian Work Association, .-whoso .beautiful, -and artistic needlewbrk has always commanded a ready sale. She,and a friend .wero asked to each ■ contribute .a' small' article' to ■ a .bazaar stall, but the stipulation was made that in'oach caso not moro than sixpenco should bo spent on the '.materials used in tho making. Tho pno lady bought a stjuaro 'of' book muslin, which sho converted into a table centre) and painted .thereon, a charming group of sweet peas. . IThis easily brought seven-and-six-pence. But greater .triumph was in store 'tor'-... tho Melbourno worker, who, having judiciously expended the. allotted sum in artistic yet cheap materials, .produced such a : delightful, blotter that ia ' purchaser paid soventeen-and-sixpence for.jt without, demur. Although.the, details of this success are iiot to hand, yet it/is quite possible that tho clever fingers mado the framework out of an old cardboard box, and a small qpantity of fino hessian could be'used as a covoring, on which an embroidered pattern worked in flax thread could-. bo wonderfully efFective. ; The lady in Iqucstion has a very, decided gift in the matter of design, so there would lio the added valuo of originality. The fitting up of the interior with a sheet or so of bloltmgpapor need but cost the fraction of a penny, so after all.it. can.easily bo seen how quito-, possible it is to make attractive-.wares at .little cost.. But.careful, neat, and dexterous fingers aro indispensablo, for finish is of even more- importanco'than the actual work and oxecution involved. . . ' |
