FIRES.
OUTBREAK AT JOHNSTON AND CO.'S. An outbreak of fire that-might havo been serious occurred last night at the premises' of Messrs. Johnston and C 0.,: at the'corner of Feathercton and Panama Streets, tho ground ; flooi- of which: was used by the owners ob offices, and the upper by the firm of Messrs. • 8011, Gully, Bell, and Myers. The Firo Brigade received the call at 6.52 p.m , and were promptly in attendance. ' The firo seems'to havo originated at the roar'of the building, tho portion used as . a grocery department. Flames were emerging when the brigade arrived,-but a couple of lea'ds wero quickly;playing; .'and the" fo' was'never allowed to get .out';, of- hand. A good deal <jf damage .was done to tho lower portion, but tho upper floor was 'saved.'- The flooring separating the two. stories just caught. : but was put out in time. Had this not been aone, t Or had the brigade arrived fivo minutes later, . the.; building' would have been gutted, as the partitions, were of thin and inflammable material. -As it was, the brigade were only kept out. for about a quarter ot an hour. The stoctof ohecso was insured in the New Zealand Ultice by a floating policy, and tho-bnild-mg . and plant, were insured in', tho same office. for £ JQO. Inree. cottages, m gosewarne Street, off Selwyn Streot, Spreydon, wero destroyed by firo early this-morning. The firo began in Mr. ,li.
