ACCIDENTS AND FATALITIES.
FATAL TENT FIRE. (BT TBLEOBAPH—I'HKSS ASSOCIATION.) Ashburton, May 21. A single man, about 50 years of age, was found burnt to death in tho remains of a tent on the lluapuna estate, some milos beyond Mayfiold, this morning. , Deceased lived by himself. Ho was engaged as a stone-picker on the estate,- and when last seen yesterday was in. a happy frame of mind. It is presumed that the tent accidentally canght fire while ho was asleep. A BOY'S DEATH. : ' Ashburton, May 21. An inquest touching the death of James Walsh, tho boy fatally injured at Wheatstone yesterday, wae held to-day by Mr. V. G. Day, magistrate, without a jury, A verdict was returned that deceased met his death accidentally through injuries received as a result of bouig run over by a wagon drawn by a traction engine, no blame being attachable to anyone. Tho evidence Bhowed that deceased was on tho draw-har of the wagon, unknown to tho driver, and while dismounting ho slipped, and a wheel passed over him, inflicfcmg.shocking injuries, from which he died shortly afterwards. EXPIRED IN A FOOTBALL PAVILION. . Oamaru, May 21. I '•■ At an inquest touching the death of Thos. ' Martin, taken suddenly ill while playing football yesterday, and who oxpired in tho pavilion, a : verdict of death from compression "and hemorrhage of the brain, caused by accident, i waa rcturaod v The evidence showed that Martin had injured his head while playing a fortnight ago. This afternoon, two young men walking round Home Bay came aoross the body of a man with'li bullet hole through- his'head,. and a sis-chambored revolver in. his left hand, the indications being that be bad oommitted suicido. His identity ia at present somowhnt of a mystery. From papers found on .nim, nis name appears to be Harold A, Davenport, and he is thought to have stayed at tho Royal Hotel a fortnight ago; Police inquiries elicited the. fact that, Tast February; de- ! ceased boaidcd a steamer at Papeete, in Tahiti, for thei purpose of coming to this country, but -the captain, fearing that ho would bo classed as an undesirable immigrant by the authorities here,-refused to allow him to unless he deposited £100 security, 'fins ho did and was taken aboard. INJURED WHILE DRIVING. ■ (nr TSisOBArn—SPECIAL CORRBSrOJfDENT.) ' . Palmcrsten,'May, 21: Jlr. W. T. Hardie; of Messrs. J. 'Smith and Son, Ashhurst, -met with a-serious accident on Thursday. "Ho. was driving'along the Pohangina in passing another vehiclo, his .horse shied to tho side of the road. The trap collided with a stunlp, and was overturned. Mr. Hardie was thrown heavily to the ground," his thigh being dislocated. Dr. Martin was sent for, and, on arrival, ordored tho sufferer to the hospital.
