FROM THE CITY COUNCIL. : Duriug a special meeting of tlip Oity Coun*, ' cil yesterday 'afternoon 'the membors'of tho council made presentations to the Mayor (tho Hon. T. W.: Hislop) and Mrs. Hislop, thafc being the last meeting of tho present council. Councillor Luke, (senior' councillor) oxplained that the councillors'; bad decided to make the presentations _ and i)n their behalf ho asked Councillor Smith (the oldest councillor in point of servico) to egress their appreciation of:, Mr. Hislop's scrviceß. . Councillor Smith said it bad been felt tliat the Mayor should ngt be allowed to retire without'due recognition, and he paid a high s tribute to tho. Mayor's special abilities. Tho councillors felt that having him to conduct the business bad improved them, and the council wore greatly indebted to him for bis services. As' ho had served under twelve mayors, ho was,thus able to form an opinion of Mr.'HislopY qualifications. On behalf, of the councillors, ho presented the Mayor!with , a silver, inkstand and silver pen. suitably inscribed, and had much pleasure in asking hint . to accept. Also,' he handed the; Mayor a . silver fountain pen - for/Mrs. Hislop in recognition of her services to tho women of Wellington. Ho remarked this presentawere entirely on. behalf of. tbo council- ' lors themselves. In rtsply, 1 the Mayor, said he could not ado> quatoly express his feelings. It had come aa a complete surprise to him. Ho was pleased • , at' this remarks of Couiicillor Smith',;' who ■ only . 'expressed what ho felt.
