CITY COUNCIL.
FORTNIGHTLY MEETINC. The final meeting of the present City Council was held last night, there being present: The Mayor (the Hon. T. W. Hislop), and Councillors Luke, Smith, Ballinger, Cohen, Hales, Shirtcliffe, Biss, Fletcher, Fisher, Carmichael, Hindmarsh, M'Laren, Morrah, Murdoch, and Godber. •The Reserves Committee submitted a port of the oxpenses incurred in the up-keep of.the Botanical Gardens, Town: Belt, cemeteries, etc., for the year ending March 31. The amount expended on the Basin Reserve was £244; Kent Terrace Gardens, : £214; Karori cemetery, £769; Kelburne Park, £770; Newtown Park, £715; the Zoo, £110; total, £6300. The list of requirements comprises : Sydney Street cemetery—Five-roomed cottage in brick for sexton, £600; Newtown Park—Fencing, £138; Botanical Gardens— \Vater4ank, propagating house, continuation of widening main walks and laying- glazed gutter tiles and pipes in Botanical Gardens, £266; Kelburne Park —Fence around playground, £263; Karori cemetery—Water supply for cemetery from Northland water system, £200; Duppa' Street Grounds—Lawn mower and horse Toller, £75; Basin Reserve —Lawn mower, £35; total, £1577.. In moving the adoption of "the report; Councillor Luke complimented • the\ Superintendent of Reserves on bis work in the past. The Fire Brigade accounts, for the year ending March 31, ; were given as follow: — Receipts—Harbour Board • contribution, £100; rent of properties, £250; Sundry/ repayments, £124; total, £474. Expenditure —Wages, £3034; salaries, £612; plant and repairs, £703; keep of horses, £246; uniforms, £266; fuel, and lighting, £146; rent and insurance, £196; land purchased, £1525; tire stations," £905; sundries, £153; interest, £360; total, £8150. V'lb.6 Fire Brigade Committee recommended that an account for £67 65., be forwarded to the for the services of. the tire brigade at the fire which occurred on property owned by the Postal Department, at the corner of Featherston Street and Panama Street, on May 22, 1908. Councillor Ballinger, chairman. of the committee, stated that the account, included no claim for water.The Mayor remarked that at least £100 shonld;be charged for that item. .}'■'■' The report was adopted., . , - The Libraries Committee recommended that 'no tender be accepted' for the bookbinding : contract at present on account-of the-unreasonably-high-prices quoted. The committee are going -into -the question of establishing a bindery, for their,own books. - The,/report was adopted.: . The Finance and Property Committee recommended: That;a reply in terms? of the city, engineer's, report be. forwarded to Mr. W. H. Ballinger, who is claiming compensation for damage "to property at Kelburne, .on aocbunt-of ■ the laying .of the'drains through his property; that the proposal, of the Wellington Gas Company to lay new mains be' agreed .to subject to certain conditions. : : : ,' '■'-.' , : ■',', '.-. ' Referring to the second clause, the Mayor said the city engineer was a little suspicious with regard to the,circumstances, but would ,watoh the 'matter. ;],' ;. The report "was adopted.
