I.- Spam won tho tennis championship on tho Feilding Tennis Club's courts on Saturday, beating Barron in tho final, 6—3, 6—2. Tho Palmerston rink won tho Yates oiiallengo feathers from Feilding on Saturday.

The' Carterlon Gun Club fired a series of sweepstakes on Saturday afternoon, tho irst being won by H. Jonsou, from off the 19yds. mark, J. G. Oates (10yds.) being second. H. Jensen also won tho next, with. I. G. Oates second, wliilo J. G. Oates and 5. Jensen tied for lirst honours in the third sweep, and divided the prize. A double :ise was won by H. Jensen. Tho service in St. Mark's Church on Sunday evening was conducted by the Rev. H.. Watßon, of Masterton, who exchanged pulpits for the evening with tho Rev. R. I'oung. Tho Wairarapa South County Council has accepted the tender of Mr. T. Aplin, at Ls. Bd. per cubic jard, for tho delivery of 300 yards of metal on Chester Road, Clarerillo. The annual meeting of the Carterton Football Club was held on Saturday night, Mr. C. Reid occupied the chair. The bal-ance-sheet and report showed a credit of £11 15s. sd. The election of officers rosutled: Patron, Mr. W, C. Buchanan, M.P.; president, Mr. C. ' Reid; vice-presidents ( Messrs. T. H. Hughes, A. Cadwallader, J. Fraser, W. Strang, P. Cole, V. M. Halley, R. Cooper, W. Price, B. Wadham; captain, Mr. C. Groubo; vice-captain, Mr. A. Cadwallader; secretary and. treasurer, Mr. J. M. Nicholls; management and match committee, the captain, vice-captain, secretary, Messrs. C. I?eid, and N. M'Kenzio; delegates to Rugby 1 Union, Messrs. C. Reid, J. M. Nicholls, and H. M'Kenzio; auditors, Messrs. H. Hall, and L. Smart. Tho season is to bo opened on Saturday, and" it was decided to try and arrange a match with Konini on Juno 3, and with Greytown, Mastorton, and Gladstone, at dates to be arranged. Instructions were given, tho delegates to tho union to uphold the classification scheme It was resolved to place 9 senior - and junior team in the champion* ship, and also a third-class team, if sufficient members came forward. The Dalefield Football Club has decided to enter a junior and third-class team for tho Saturday championship, Mr. \Y. Hart has been elected captain and secretary. Harvest thanksgiving services wero held on Sunday in tho Methodist Church, the Rev. J. J. Pendray, of Eketahuna, preaching in the morning, and tho Rev. W. J. Elliott in tho evening. Tho choir was considerably strengthened, and the decorations wero effective.

Mrs. M. E. Barratt lias received th« sum of £172 11s.. 9d., being tho amount subscribed by the townspeople of Levin and elsewhere as a mark of sympathy for the loss of her husband, Mr. F. Barratt, journalist, ,who/was killed by an acetylene gas explosion about 18 months ago.
EKETAHUNA.
The Eketahuna branch of the Farmers , ' Union has decided to ask the Minister for Agriculture and tho member for the district to attend the Provincial Conference, to be held at Eketahuna on, May 25. Remits dealing .with the publication of • Government analyses of seed and manures, and the railway fares of fanners visiting State farms aro to bo submitted by tho Elcetahuim branch.
OTAKI.
A man named Leggo was arrested at Otaki by Constable Satberloy on Friday afternoon, on a charge of theft of a suit of clothes., Later, when the man was .being supplied with tea, ho raised objection to milk being in it. The constablo was within a few feet of tho door of tlio cell, making arrangements with Mrs. Satherley for a fresh cup, ■ when tho man scaled tho wall and dashed for liberty. A huo and cry was at once raised, but the man made good his escape, and, aided by darkness, evaded his > pursuers. Constable Satherley has searched over since, but can find no trace of tho fugitive. It is understood that this is tho first thing of tho kind which the constable has had since joining tho force, many years ago. Locally ho is regarded as a very capable officer. On Sunday the Rev. Frank Isitt conducted special services in the district on behalf of tho Methodist Church. On each ocsion there were large congregations.

Tho Railway staff here lias been further diminished* by tho transfer of Mr. C. W. Peryer, goods-shed assistant-clerk, to Palkak'ariki. Mr. Peryer has been stationed at Featherston for some time, and was popular with all who had business at.the goodsshed. On Saturday he was presents3'by"his fellow employees with a safety razor and outfit, and a hand-bag. A consignment of 2500 sheep left hore by train on Monday inornng.
