NOTES AND COMMENTS. The Taranaki Cup and the Timaru Cup, both milo and a quarter races, come up for decision to-day. Of the nine horses most fancied for the Sydney Cup no fewer than eight are- three-year-olds.
Tho first important event of the English flat racing season, the Lincolnshire Handicap, one mile, will be run in England today. Ngaruahoe, a New Zealand-bred horse, showed a lot of pace in the Übique Welter at Caullield on March 13, but failed to see out the seven furlongs and finished third. At the Oxford Jockey Club's meeting on Saturday, the Oxford Cup, one mile, and a distance, was won by Narrangario (Voyou— Titbits), with Valo and Good Mario iii the places. Narrangaric also accounted for the Domain Handicap, seven furlongs. Other winners at the mooting were Helianthes, All White, and Tyrant. W. Pine and C. Hussey encli rode two winners during the afternoon". Prism, who was formerly an inmate of F. Higgott s Trentham stable, was given a run in n seven-furlong race at Oxford on Saturday, but ho was unable to gain a place in fclio moderate company lie met. Though the New Zealand St. Legor Stakes was robbed of some interest last year by the absence of Elevation and ftonifor'm, tho five sUrtcrs mado quite a good race of it. The next contest for the event will be run at T.rcntham on April 2-1, and at tho present time it looks as if over lialf-a-do?/eu hoifpp will go to tho po6t. This season's winners
that still remain in aro Husbandman, Aherhrothock, Kopu, Chanteuse, Bollin, and Master Soult. Of these, Master Soult may have left the Dominion before the event comes up for decision. The Wellington owners, Mr. J. Monk and Mr. Lanco Wood, will be represented respectively by Diabolo and Ukraine.
New Zealanders generally entertain the idea (says an Australian writer) that tho form of their horses is too highly estimated in Australia. This may or may not be so, but if it is, it is hardly to be wondered at, seeing that New Zealand-bred horses havo won the Metropolitan, V.R.C. Derby, Champion Race, and V.R.C. St. Leger each four times; A.J.C. Derby, Melbourne Cup, pud Futurity Stakes throe times; Australian Cup, Newmarket Handicap, and Sydney Cup twiceeach, and A.J.C. Oaks, Maribyrnong Plate, V.R.C. Oaks, A.J.C. St.. Logcr, Caulfield Guineas, Caulfield Cup, A.J.C. Breeders' Plate, Toorak Handicap, A.J.C. Champagne Stakes, Williamstown Cup, Caulfield Grand National Steeplechase, and other races once.
Stylish, who met her death on the Hastings training tracks yesterday, was a four-year-old half-sister to Pink Un. Stylish commenced hor racing career last season, her only win being in a Maiden Scurry , at Gisborno. This season sho has been a most consistent performer, winning races at tho Napier Park Racing Club's Spring and Autumn meetings, tho Poverty Bay Turf Club's Spring :.nd Summer meetings, tho Dannevirko Sunum.-r meeting and the Hawke's Bay Jockey Club's Summer meeting. She was owned by Mr. L. Furr, who had declined more than one offer for her.
Handicaps for tho first day's events at the Feilding Jockey Club's Easter meeting will bo declared next Monday.
To Kahurangi won a six furlong race at Trentham in January, but his form at the Wanganui Cup meeting suggests that ho is more at home ovor a course a furlong less. Ho is engaged in tho Stewards' Handicap, five furlongs, at Taranaki to-day, in which ho will bo opposed to Mon Amie, Genuine, and Waihuka.
Applegarth has been placed second in several two-year-old races this season, but has not so far registered a win. At tho Ssuth Canterbury Jockey Club's meeting today, he will be given another chance to earn distinction, Boutade being the only winner opposed to him.
Mythical, who is trained at Riccarton, does wonderfully good track work, but sho has run so many bad races that her party found it an unwise policy to ever support her to win. Sho was in winning form at Akaroa a week ago, but whether that was a flash in the pan or not, will be proved at the Timaru meeting to-day, whoro sho is engaged in the Smithfield Handicap, the field for which includes Lupulite, Silkweb, Liza, and Miss Gal.
The racing trade at New Plymouth is reported to be in good order for to-day's racing, and, as a large number- of visiting horses are engaged, a successful meeting is anticipated. Both Uhlando and Sir Artegal nave gone through good preparations for the Taranaki Cup, and several other horses trained in. ' New Plymouth are expected to hold their, own against the visiting contingents. The best gallop recorded on the track yesterday morning was that accomplished by Moriarty, who rattled off six furlongs in lmin. 16sec. Moriarty is engaged in tho Flying Handicap to-day with Bst. 81b. Lan San, who is one of tho Cup candidates, was also responsible for a good gallop. Whetumarama is engaged in both the Cup and the Flying Handicap, and it is not certain which he will bo started in, but Hatch has been engaged to ride him in either race. I. Carroll will ndo Te Kahurangi in the bteivards Handicap. The following aro the probable starters and riders in the Taranaki Cup, oho milo and a quarter —Kii. marnpok, Bst. 121b. (F. Flynn); Mahuta, Bst. 101b. (N, Campbell); Tan San, Bst. 9!b. (Geo. Price); Uhlando, Sst. 51b.. (B Deelev) • Tiptoe Bst 31b (C. Cochrane); Sir ArteS «st. lib (R. L.
